Do hemp drops (CBD oil) really help against rheumatism, arthritis or joint problems?
Why are so many people convinced that CBD oil can help them with chronic pain? We asked around.
Rheumatism is a disease with many faces. In all cases, it costs the affected patients a large part of their quality of life. Then there are the numerous side effects that classic painkillers can cause. Often, additional medication must be taken to reduce unwanted side effects. When looking for alternatives, many people come across CBD oil.
What is CBD?
The cannabinoid CBD ( cannabidiol ) is the most important ingredient in hemp oil. CBD stimulates the part of our nervous system, the endocannabinoid system (ECS). Our body regulates, among other things, the body’s own defence against pain. Legal hemp varieties that contain less than 0.3 percent THC are used to produce CBD oils.
According to the WHO (World Health Organization), CBD is not addictive, not intoxicating and is also not harmful to health.
Thus, CBD oils can also be taken for a long time and do not lead to dependence.
What is rheumatism?
The term rheumatism covers many different painful diseases. Joints and bones are particularly affected, but also muscles, tendons and bursae.
Is it rheumatism, arthritis, osteoarthritis, or gout?
Often these terms are mentioned in the same breath. However, these are different diseases of the joints with different causes. Here are the major differences:
Arthritis: inflammation of the joints, often popularly called rheumatism
Osteoarthritis: mechanical wear and tear on the joints and cartilage
Gout: painful inflammation due to a metabolic disorder
What they all have in common, however, is great pain.
In contrast, strong pain relievers and anti-inflammatory drugs with many side effects are usually prescribed. Therefore, many patients are looking for alternatives that relieve pain and inflammation, but without habituation effects and without harmful effects.
Does CBD oil work against joint pain?
CBD is used in medicine for pain. This also includes a prescription spray for painful muscle cramps in multiple sclerosis (Sativex®). On the one hand, on the recommendation of the WHO, the EU wants to increase research on drugs with CBD in the future. On the other hand, this means increased competition for conventional drugs in the pharmaceutical industry. It is therefore not surprising that the pharmaceutical lobby is bending relevant laws to the benefit of the industry and to maximize profits. Thus, all other pain patients have to wait and statements about the effectiveness of CBD in pain are neither desired nor allowed.
But the body itself also produces cannabinoids to defend against pain without having to be supplied from outside.
These are so-called endocannabinoids. It has been found that people whose bodies produce enough of it, the body’s own pain defence works better than others:
The body’s own cannabinoids reduce sensitivity to pain.
Researchers assume that the path from pain to the brain via the nerve pathways is interrupted. In addition, there is the anti-inflammatory component, which combats painful foci of inflammation in the joints.
The body produces cannabinoids in order to erase “pain memory”.
When acute pain becomes chronic, it is often due to pain memory. The body notices long-lasting pain. That is, the patient continues to suffer, although the cause no longer exists. In order to erase this learned pain, more endocannabinoids are formed.
When pain becomes a psychological burden.
Chronic pain means an additional heavy burden on the psyche of a person affected. Sleep disorders or depression are not uncommon. Since endocannabinoids regulate serotonin (happiness hormone) levels, mood improves too. This also leads to easier handling of pain disorder.
What are the side effects of CBD?
Compared to conventional painkillers, the risk of side effects related to blood pressure, liver or kidneys is significantly lower. Thus, CBD oils can also be taken for a long time. They do not lead to any dependency.
How are hemp drops taken?

Summary of CBD oil for joint pain
Many patients with chronic joint problems are looking for alternatives to improve mobility and reduce pain. Since there is still no drug with CBD for arthritis, osteoarthritis or other chronic pain on the market, no statements can be made as to whether CBD is effective for this pain. But the body itself also forms cannabinoids in order to activate the body’s own defence against pain. Lt. WHO CBD is not harmful to health and has no habituation effects. Fortunately, each of us can still decide for ourselves whether we want to take CBD for pain and keep the use of conventional painkillers as low as possible.
